Dr. Michael Elsbernd, organist and director of music at St. John’s Lutheran Church and ASAP board member, is directing ASAP’s Piano Lab program at Willkie House, one of the oldest African American community-based organizations in Iowa. Elsbernd meets twice weekly during the school year with a dozen students in two cohorts, first-year and second-year piano students, and offers a summer exploratory session for piano-curious, potential new students. ASAP keyboards and headphones are left on site at Willkie House for students to practice daily between their weekly lessons. The students are excited for this opportunity and are showing great commitment to practicing and improving their skills. The mission of Wilkie House, established in 1917, is to develop character and esteem in young people through the promotion of academics, social skills building, health, and recreation. ASAP’s Piano Lab is made possible with grant funding from the Meier-Bernstein Foundation.
