The global pandemic has sent students home from schools and canceled nearly all in-person programming in 2020, and ASAP has not been an exception. ASAP’s Spring Break Staycation and the entire Spring session of classes were canceled. The ASAP Callanan Drama Club’s production of Game of Tiaras, including two performances, was canceled. Summer programs in schools and in three branches of the Des Moines Public Library are canceled. Meanwhile, ASAP is circling the wagons, planning a strategic pivot with input from board leaders, Teaching Artists, program and funding partners. An Iowa Arts & Culture Emergency Relief Grant—awarded by the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts—is helping offset the loss of program income.
