The fifth annual ASAP Summer Arts Camp takes place in Evelyn Davis Park the last week in June, June 24–28, 2013. This year’s camp features the theme of JAZZ, planned in conjunction with John Terpkosh of the Parks and Recreation Department/Evelyn Davis Park.
Kids of all ages can enjoy two free classes per day, each of the five days. Studio options include Jazz Music (teaching artist Amber Duimstra), Papier-Mâché Saxophone Sculptures (Tim Schmitt), Jazz Dance (Valerie Willams, of Co’Motion Dance Theater in Ames), and two sections of Painting (Individual Works on Paper and Murals) (Lisa Rasmussen and Tanya Keith).
At the completion of the camp, ASAP will present one of the two saxophone sculpturesto Davis Park, as well as two painted murals promoting the Jazz in July event that take place there July 6. Two other murals will be presented to 6th Avenue Corridor for their Jazz in July event later in the month (7/20).
The week-long camp is sponsored by City of Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department and St. John’s Lutheran Church. Special thanks to Laura Peters and 6th Avenue Corridor for providing the wood panels and primer for the murals!
